Meet The Saboteur

You can’t hold anything against EA anymore. Gone are the days of poor quality franchise titles, made simply for cash in hand. Titles like the Harry Potter series, the even numbered yearly installments of FIFA (Notice how the odd numbers are good, even are bad? Don’t get your hopes up for 2010) but recently they have stepped up their game, examples being Mirror’s Edge, Battlefield: Bad Company, and Dead Space. Personally, I haven’t much love for the three and had some doubt that EA would ever publish a game I’d be excited about.
Enter The Saboteur. Set in World War II Paris amidst Nazi Occupation, a bleak and gritty scene where the normal activities of life have become nothing but a memory as Germany’s Aryan warriors walk the streets with zero tolerance to any sort of freedom of speech. We, the player, take control of ‘Street-Tough Irish Racing Mechanic’ Sean Devlin whom has a major bone to pick with one of the residing Nazi officers in Paris. Now take it from me, having an Irishman out for your blood is a VERY BAD THING. The fact that Sean Devlin then goes about imploding bridges, setting a battalion of tanks alight, assassinating officers and generally kicking a** is a testament to that.
Gameplay is allegedly going to go in the form of Guerrilla Warfare. Sean will use weapons, fists, and the environment in order to bring down the Nazi oppressors as he scales the landscape of Paris in an Assassin’s Creed like fashion. The game has been confirmed to be an open world-ed environment, with different areas that Sean will have to liberate from Nazi occupation. There is a sort of GTA style police system implemented. The more open Sean is with his activities the more attention he will get from the Nazi’s. So basically, walking out in the middle of the street and looking suspicous will get the attention of a patrol, assaulting someone will get him an entire unit after him, and then blowing up a HQ get’s him a fast track to Hitler’s most wanted. An interesting feature, one which I find very cool, is how the visuals of the game will change with Sean’s actions. Read on.
When an area is under Nazi control, the area will be coloured in a Black/White/Red pallete of bleak and miserable design. However, once liberated upon completeling a certain mission, the darkness is cast out and the area is filled with vibrant and beautiful colour to show the return of freedom.
The Saboteur is, in my opinion, looking to become one of my most anticipated games of 2009. Hints of vehicles, exploration, variety of combat moves and weapons along with so much other features is just making it look more and more like a must have. An open world, similar to that of Assassin’s Creed, combat that is both a blend of WWII FPSs & Brawlers, design that is both pretty & gritty at the same time and the game has still got so much more to be announced.
