RPGs You need to Play

I didn’t want to do a conventional list this time around but rather a bunch of my favorite RPGs that any gamer should at least try. I wanted to keep the descriptions short and sweet with gamer keywords being the highlights that give the game its flavor and uniqueness.
Breath of Fire III
Out of the Breath of Fire series its third installment best combined all its elements together to form a truly memorable game. The story is complex yet simple and features a very interesting antagonist featured in a different light in this installment. The dragon gene system had to be my favorite for Ryu’s dragon power allowing you to customize the dragon forms you want to use to your liking.
Gamer Keywords: Dragon Genes, Learning Skills, Mentor System, Faerie Village
Final Fantasy VII
If you haven’t heard of it well you’ve been living under a rock since 1997.
Gamer Keywords: Limit Breaks, Materia, ATB, Cloud, Sephiroth, fanboyism
Star Ocean 2
With such colorful caste characters and unique battle system how can you ever forget Star Ocean 2 once you played it. This game probably has the most replay value of any game I have played to date, with so many different endings and the varied party you can pick through each play through its a must for any RPG fan. The battle system the Star Ocean series primary attraction, is incredibly fun. Battles take place in real time with full control of your character jumping and running around the battlefield beating up there enemies until you win.
Gamer Keywords: Action Battle system, Item Creation, Private Actions
Chrono Trigger
The best time traveling adventure to date and another rpg with memorable characters and the first lovable mute protaganist I ever played as. Chrono Trigger’s battle system is a lot like its Final Fantasy counterparts but offers combo skills which are characters spells and skills combined together with between two or tree characters. I remember trying every character combination to get all the combo skills in game.
Gamer Keywords: Time Travel, Combo Skills, ATB, Chrono. Classic
Super Mario RPG
Who can forget Mario’s first RPG adventure which was more then I ever expected it be at the time. It feels much like a mix of traditional Mario games on field with rpg battles. Letting me choose power ups for my characters when then leveled and bash buttons while a skill was charging was more then enough to make me happy.
Gamer Keywords: Mario, Super Jump, Level Power Ups, Interactive Skills, Classic
Xenogears
Epic is the only way to describe Xenogears, the music, battles, characters, and story, everything is flawless in its presentation. Though some may complain that the storyline is overly complicated, I would respond to them by asking why Lost is still on.
Gamer Keywords: Epic, Gears, Storyline, Deathblows
Tales of Phantasia
A different kind of time traveling adventure as you fight Dhaos in the past and future. The story is great especially that lovable Arche with a great interactive battle system. The game is actually gave birth to both the Tales series and Star Ocean series, this is echoed throughout both game series.
Gamer Keywords: Action Battle System, Time Travel,
Suikoden II
A huge cast of characters, most having more personality and back story then all your party members in Chrono Cross combined and you can use twice as many. The story is fantastic and you’ll be kept occupied the entire time trying to recruit all 108 Stars of Destiny into your army.
Gamer Keywords: 108 Stars of Destiny, Runes, Lots of Minigames
Wild Arms
The Wild Arms series puts the dungeon crawling, treasure hunting and puzzle solving to a whole new level. Characters receive tools throughout the storyline which you use to solve puzzles and get past obstacles which can be fun and frustrating depending on how good you are at that kind of thing. This is another game with memorable storyline and characters, who can forget that heart breaking opening sequence?
Gamer Keywords: Tools, Guardians, ARMs, Puzzles

I am pride. Esp. @ your inclusion of Chrono Trigger (a game i replay yearly) and the RPG that turned me into a religious skeptic – Xenogears.
spiritual disenfranchisement FTW! but seriously, that game caused a big stink in japan for it’s heavy usage of christian themes and imagery. where was the wacko right when this gem dropped? oh wait that was a bit before the world went insane
I’m now very interesting in taking a look at Suikoden for the Nintendo DS.
Mario RPG….favorite SNES game ever. Followed closely by Chrono Trigger.
Well Xenosaga didn’t start much of anything either so I think the right ignores stuff games except when it comes to alien & human sex scenes, anyone remember that lol?
There are alot of gems on snes but those are my favorites for rpg genre.
