New Super Mario Bros. Wii Impressions

Nintendo’s Press conference was most certainly better than last year, but that doesn’t mean it still competed with the other two companies in terms of hardcore games and new innovative technology. Still though, I gotta hand it to Nintendo for making me a believer again with the introduction of a new Metroid, a new Mario Galaxy, and of course, the New Super Mario Bros. Wii title, among others. Although I hate the name, it still could prove to be a blast when it hits its release date sometime by the end of this year.

If you know me personally, you will know I have a deep love for Nintendo, more old school than their new stuff, but I still have an appreciation of them nonetheless. I understand this company is out to make money, and the best way to do that is to throw up some, let me just say, not so polished work and tap into that casual market that isn’t as hard to please as the hardcore that thrives on that deep connection to their video games and the characters they know and love. I for one believe they did an amazing job on New Super Mario Bros. for the DS (again, another stupid title, where is my SMB 4) and think this game has potential to sell much like that one did and still does. The demo they showed off at E3 (attached at the end of this article) was a little lackluster, but hey, I think a lot of different demos showed off was a little lacking… Halo is one that I bring to mind, and we all know that game will be great.

So the demo showed off what looks like a 4-player co-op game, they’ve tried this before with the 4 swords title from the Zelda series and I never got around to playing that, mainly because I didn’t know anybody that would want to play a Zelda game like that. The basic premise of this game is to try and get to the end, but you also want to score the most points. The game can be played alone but I’m sure doesn’t hold as much enjoyment as would playing with your friends. You can play the co-op game two different ways, competitive and cooperatively. The competitive aspect is to try and get the most points out of everybody and cooperatively entails you all work together to get to the end. There will be moments where you can use the environment to your advantage to send the other players to the endless pits or use the multicolored Yoshi’s to slurp them up and abrupt their progress.

The characters chosen for this multi-player game are a little alarming: Mario, Luigi, and 2 different colored toads. It’s surprising they couldn’t pull another character from their large database of friends and fiends but the choice of not one but 2 toads was a little alarming to me. The trailer looks like they are far in the development of the game, introducing a couple new suits for the players including what looks like a penguin suit that shoots ice balls instead of fireballs and a new jump suit that can launch you high into the air. Most of the stages shown just looks like new attempts on some classic stages; you got your ice worlds, your fire worlds, and those wonderful underwater levels.

All these elements seem fun, but does it have the lasting appeal for a full fledged game? Only time will tell. Check out the trailer they had playing at their booth and see for yourself if this game is something you are looking forward to from Nintendo.

Should of had Wario and Waluigi as the other 2 characters, or have the real Toad and Princess peach or Princess Daisy if they are saving Peach !!!

looks friggin sweet! for those of us in their late 20's who grew up on NES, a true SMB4 would be a godsend. As it stands, this title will let us share our enthusiasm with our spouse/children. Thank you Nintendo!

It does look more like a DLC Game then a disc game; I hope it will be half as large as Galazy/Zelda/ or Metroid. I grew up on Nintendo and in a sense still perfer Nintendo to Sony or Microsoft. This E3 blew me away with the games, microsofts partnerships, and Natal and Milo. Nintendo has some stiff competition now. The next 2 years should be sweet for gamers.
