Prototype Review
Fanboys be damned, I’ve reviewed inFamous and now I shall take aim at Prototype. Lets see what sort of reaction this gets eh? (I have a bet on the answer) Since the release of both games, Microsoft fanboys have rallied behind Prototype while PS3 fanboys stuck by precious Sony. Now explain to me this, how does a game that is MULTIPLATFORM become Microsoft’s answer to inFamous? Let it be fanboys, just let it be.
Prototype follows one ‘Alex Mercer’ who wakes up in a morgue, after it’s assumed he died, to find himself host to a weapon of mass destruction and with no memory of who he was aside from being a former Gentek employee. From then he finds his sister, ex girlfriend, fellow doctor and other thinly developed characters help you piece together whats on…then disappear for the rest of the game as the city is slowly consumed by the same virus that created you. Prototype holds a good concept with a good angle, then goes and makes a mess of it. Every ‘major’ character appears for several missions and then disappears for the rest of the game with no explanation or update at ALL. However I can see that Radical wants the player to use the equally poorly thought out idea the ‘Web of Intrigue’ to piece together what happens…no thanks. It’s not finding them is the problem, but finding them and then watching them get killed by a gentle little love tap from a infected pedestrian just seconds before you get to him is annoying. So bad marks for the story and ways in which it’s delivered I’m afraid.

Prototype plays like a super-powered Grand Theft Auto, a term I used to describe inFamous, but I’m not going to say its a clone. Open world sandboxes will always be a shadow of GTA, simply because it made them famous. Alex Mercer is, for lack of better term, un-f***ing-stoppable. Simply holding R2/RT sends him on a stampede and running up the walls. Leaping from building to building as he effortlessly tears New York a new one with a variety of super cool, badass, awesome, only sometimes repetitive, superpowers. Chaining together combos and committing genocide has never been so damn fun. However, switch to what your supposed to be doing, like infiltrating bases and etc, and you’ll find it much much less fun. The game is only fun when you don’t have any goals or targets. Having fun is easy when you do what you want, but I don’t want to be nearly put off the game by the main missions every time I approach them.

Presentationally speaking Prototype is a mixed back. We started off with and incredibly well made introduction…then fell to average game design with only a few glimpses of the quality we saw at the start. Radical you made one of the coolest game introductions I ever saw, why didn’t you give us more! The weapon design, especially for that excuse of a bazooka, was dreadful. The hijacking of helicopters looked poor, that door was made of either tin or coke cans I swear, and just the simple things that aren’t very important but always there just look poor. The important stuff, like Mercer himself, aren’t too bad and even look good sometimes, especially the core, but overall I did like the presentation as a whole I just think Radical could have done something of a better job.
One more thing I must bring up. When first it was being promoted, we where told something about destructible environments that really got me interested. This feature was made the star of the very poor Conflict: Denied Ops game. Consistent destruction. What you destroy, stays destroyed. Well they delivered, sort of. We can’t destroy anything, so when I throw a car at a simple wall if didn’t leave a dent and it remained in perfect health throughout the game until the infection got to it. Then to end this all I will tell you with a straight face that it took me no less than one night to complete the story missions and by morning I went back to playing MGO & Red Faction.

I’m sorry Prototype, your only entertaining when I’m not trying to play you and to be honest you remind me to much of Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and I even penciled you as one of the big games of May/June. You’re great fun in small periods of time but with so many other games that other that same package and more, Grand Theft Auto an example. The power play is fantastic, but the controls make it feel like your struggling with it. The story is nicely thought out but not well delivered and ends up wafer thin despite everything to tell you otherwise. This is a rental essential. Prototype is a badly delivered good idea, it could very well be your type of game. I enjoy it for short burst of mindless fun which I don’t even bother saving when I’m finished, perhaps you’ll enjoy it for more but for me. Nay!

Haven't played myself, but I expected it not to be too great. However, I was a massive fan of Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, it's still one of my favourite games to date.
I'd say if you're a fan of Hulk, and want more, obviously this would be more to your tastes. I just thought it was repetitive and the controls just weren't smooth enough to drive the action for the course of the entire game.
Still, this is very much a love it or hate it type of game in my opinion, and as such it's worth a rent if you're into the style of game-play
I might give it a rent one day, or simply wait for it to go cheap, but I still need to pick up inFamous which I thought was amazing from the demo.

inFamous is good, Prototype is ok but I've got 9 (with about another 5 hours worth of messabout that I didnt save) hours out it and i am definetly done. While I have 23 hours in inFamous, 74 hours from GTA and over 300 hours on MGO/MGS4 :p

I loved the game, I have Both prototype and Infamous and I thought prototype was alot more fun

Jason I don't think you have played infamous, because Infamous wasn't bad I just liked Prototype better, but Infamous was everything but beautiful, Prototype and infamous weren't very impressive graphically

I have only played inFamous and I like it, but if inFamous were multi-plat, no one would be calling anyone a PS3 fanboy. This is Jack's opinion and no one can alter it. I also work for the site, and I have very different opinions than Jack in some sense. People just need to respect the content we post on the site, and stop crying because one of our writers may not share the same opinion as other people.
The average scores for this game are around 7, so that would warrant around a three star rating on the site, depending on how you look at it…

Thank you, finally someone who is not raving about how good Prototype is. I bought Prototype the day it came out, put in my 360 and it was let down after let down. Why do I have to use guns and bazookas? I returned it 5 hours later b/c I could no longer stand it. It reminded me of Spiderman 3: the graphics are horrible! inFAMOUS is only my second PS3 game but I am glad b/c it shows that quality titles are being made for it, as I was about to sell it.

THE FINAL BOSS IS A FUCKING NORMAL ENEMY!!!! Not some awesome grand ass Monster or anything.. a basic enemy! The boss fight before the last one was more epic than the last boss fight! And just so were clear, IM NOT A PS3 FAN BOY! I have a Ps3 and it collects dust cause i have no games for it.. but this game was an absolute waste of money.. if i may be so bold id compare this game to windows vista cause they are both heaping sacks of fail

You only fight about one other supreme hunter, which means its not a normal fuckin enemy, and who cares, The fight with the girl was good enough

I think it was established in the review that this and infamous are not similar at all, they will inevitably be compared to each other because of the similarity in premise. It's a sad but true fact.
Nonetheless, your response to his comment was overly aggressive, and even if what he said isn't true, there is no need for personal attacks when reasonable discussion will serve just fine. I think that's why tea responded as he did.

inFamous was GOOD, thats IT, Prototype wasn't as good and I got bored of it quicker. If you like Prototype, no problem. I speak for myself. I did not personally enjoy Prototype beyond the first hour or two. I finished it on normal and then couldn't be bothered going through it again on hard, even for a gold trophy.
I saw no replay value, no interesting side missions, no special unlockables and so it was made part of my trade in list. inFamous will join it soon in a few weeks (safe bet) and to those who are having rants at my reviews WHY DONT YOU F***ING TRY IT THEN YA SOCIALLY BINGED REDNECK!

I have 3 games for it, Oblivion, DMC 4, and Rockand.. THATS IT! Games I own for my brothers 360: Infinite Undiscovery, Lost Oddessy, PROTOTYPE, Last Remnant, Naruto Rise of a Ninja, and Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2.. Sorry, to be posting another message, but none of my posts were directed at the reviewer, just this Zack guy and on to that…
The problem I have zack is that you seem like the guy what just hears stuff then just bashes it, you said you beat the game in under 10 hours with almost everthing done, Which I highly fuckin doubt, you didn't really reason out why you don't like the game, and You bashed vista? have you ever used vista, Vista is just Rocks fuckin tits.
I did reason out why i didnt like the game.. read my first post again.. And also i didnt say i had MOST of the stuff done.. I said the EVENTs.. ie the glide events, war, consume, etc.. not everything else like web of intrigue. and YES I have used vista.. im forced to mess with it on a daily basis since ima computer tech at Staples.. and I have personally owned 3 Vista machines, the first one within a week booted with a Missing OS message, the FS was corrupted.. second one would not boot properly sometimes (explorer not loading) and wouldnt let me update java for some inexplicable reason.. and the third one, a dell, the hardware was screwy on it so yes I have used vista.. Vista is the reason i switched to Mac and Linux since they actually work.. and I was comparing Prototype to Vista since the majority of people, including windows users, agree that vista is one of the worst OS's Microsoft has made.. Your talking to a computer geek here, your not going to win

Well everyone I have seen bash vista hasn't used it such as my friends but switching to mac is more of a problem with windows itsself, I thought you were just one of those people who uses XP and just talks crap on vista but if you use mac then its understandable, and trust me before I entered the airforce I was a huge computer Geek, the majority of people who hate Vista haven't used it and just joined the bandwagon.
But to each their own and you don't like prototype, I do and thats the end of it
