Red Steel 2 Impressions

Think back to when the Wii was initially announced and how much coverage the first Red Steel got. A game switching back and forth from gun-play to sword-play, and being able to do all this through motion controls excited gamers to no end. Sadly though, the limitations of Nintendo’s latest console stopped the game right in its tracks from being able to pull off what they promised. Now with the release of Wii Motionplus and the ability to actually pull these motions off successfully, Ubisoft is giving the series another shot.

I’ll be honest and tell you I never played the first Red Steel. I remember looking around on the web and seeing how the overly ambitious titled failed in a number of ways, all the excitement faded away. The way they are getting by with bringing great control to Red Steel 2 is the decision to make Wii Motionplus necessary to play this game. They claim you will be able to use the Wii Remote and swing it freely as the sword follows your every precise movement; and also claim it can measure the intensity of the swing. The trailers show off some impressive 1:1 precision, but we won’t be able to tell until we can actually get our hands on it.

“Red Steel was a unique opportunity for Ubisoft to work in tandem with Nintendo to create a title exclusively for the launch of the Wii console,” said John Parkes, EMEA marketing director at Ubisoft. “Red Steel 2 is another milestone for the company as it is the first Ubisoft title with full Wii MotionPlus integration.”

The game will take place in a wide variety of locations including the middle of an American Desert where Eastern and Western cultures have collided into a jumbled mess called Caldera. That’s really all the information that is released, but I’m sure the story will be epic…(laughs). The game could actually be cool as long as Wii Motionplus works like they say, and you don’t have to keep calibrating the damn thing. So am I looking forward to this title? I think the game has potential as long as they get the motion controls down and have full customizable controls much like the Conduit. Lets just hope gamers actually want to get out of their gaming chairs and put forth the effort to play this title.
