Star Ocean: Blue Sphere remake!?
It’s a miracle for the gaming community to get a chance to play some of the classics we missed out on but Pinocchio becoming a real boy has nothing on this. You may being saying a few things to yourself when you hear Star Ocean: Blue Sphere, most of you may say “what the hell is Star Ocean: Blue Sphere.” Well it’s the direct sequel to Star Ocean 2 with all the same lovable characters in a different adventure 2 years after the events of the Star Ocean 2.
Usually I’m not the biggest fan of mobile game announcements but this one really caught me by surprise. It turns out that the legendary elusive beast that is Star Ocean: Blue Sphere is finally being remade, strangely enough for mobile phones. The game was incredible by Game Boy Color standards or any standards really; it featured an epic adventure with 12 different playable characters with a battle system very similar to Tales series, a full item creation system, and a tool system similar to the Wild Arms series. To put it simply the game was absolutely amazing. I once got a hold of the Japanese version and was truly pleased with how the game played and was crushed to find out that I would never be able to read anything. It looks like this remake with be even better than the original, I can only hope that it will eventually be translated and show up on our iPhones as it would be a tragedy to miss this game again.
There are many reasons why most gamers don’t know this legendary title, however there are 2 primary reasons why it was pushed into obscurity. The first is simply bad timing, 2001 was the beginning of the phasing of Game Boy Color, when the Game Boy Advance came out no one had any interest in the GBC anymore and through selective amnesia forgot the game even exists. This seems to be the trend with many other titles that are released at the end of a consoles life span. The second is a technical issue with the game itself, being the largest GBC game ever made translating the game would be quite a task this is made even more complicated by the amount of text needed in the game. A lot less Japanese characters are needed compared English and with the space on the cartridge already at its limit its would be very difficult to do.
