Will Lego Rock Band = One Too Many?

Just look at all the new plastic instrument games coming out this year. My opinion on the matter: they are completely milking this franchise to reap every little coin they can get out of it. The sad truth though is that every one of these games are going to do not only well but great. One of these titles that has me a little concerned is the new Lego Rock Band announced for virtually everything. Will LRB be enough to hold its own weight, or will it become a waste of money for the developers?

LRB is exactly what you would expect it to be; an easier way to play the Rock Band genre, or a way to appeal to the even younger crowd. The thing that I’m not convinced about is the fact that this will appeal to the younger crowd even more than the other games already released. Every time I went to a store that had one set up for people to play, there were always little kids all over it. Making a game that just appeals to the youngest audience I feel it will not be the hit they are wanting; but something is telling me that I will be completely wrong.

So let’s get some of the details of this game out of the way. First off, the graphics are made out of Lego’s (duh) which makes the already not so great looking series much more bland. The songs that have been announced include: Blur: “Song 2″ Carl Douglas: “Kung Fu Fighting;” Europe: “The Final Countdown;” Good Charlotte: “Boys and Girls;” and Pink: “So What.” The game will feature a super easy mode that will make it easier for those little ones to get a grasp on how the game is played. That, besides a couple extremely minor things not worth mentioning, is all that will be new to the series. This pathetic little list to me will not be enough to make it a stand out title. I don’t see how they could make easy mode on the original Rock Band titles much more easy, unless they are noting towards something like a no fail mode.

Does anybody agree with me that this will just piss off retailers even more? Have you walked around Wal-Mart or Target or any retailer that carries video games; the section dedicated to music games is absurd. Not only will they be trying to get last year’s off the shelf (you can actually pick up the whole Guitar Hero 5 kit for around $100) but they will have around 4-5 different packages to carry with releases just for this year. Will people pick up the one that seems to have the least amount of features and that is targeted to the smallest crowd (no pun intended) or will they purchase the one that targets a much larger crowd like Guitar Hero 5 or Beatles: Rock Band? Are they running the Lego series into the ground with this title? There are still many details not announced for Lego Rock Band, but it seems to be coming together as a mediocre experience with hardly any new features and targeted towards a crowd that has probably already experienced this series before.
