Finally, New 2-D Sonic Announced
I personally have lost all joy that I once had for this Sega mascot due to all the next gen crap out that didn’t retain what made Sonic games fun. The Sonic games on Genesis were great and the only ones that even got close to these were the Sonic Advance games for the GBA; that’s it. For some odd reason, Sega kept pushing Sonic into the 3D realm and with that they lost a lot of their sonic fans. After several failed attempts, Sega has decided to bring Sonic back to the 2D level in an all new game built from the ground up… so there you go fans. Read on to see my thoughts.
My thoughts on this announcement are still a little mixed. Judging by the teaser trailer, it looks like what you would expect from a 2D Sonic game but one moment the little swirl moved away from the screen during its looping which could look cool since this is a hi-def Sonic game but will this really get people back into Sonic. Now I will say that I am a fan of the old Sonic games, but I feel like that formula has died out with me. I even liked the GBA games but again I beat the first one, played the second, and didn’t touch the third. One good thing about the Sonic games of old, although short, had high replay values due to all the different branching paths and collectibles throughout the stages.
I’m hoping they bring some new elements to Sonic and not just make another game where you move to the right at speeds that the hardware cannot keep up with. This is nothing but a teaser, so no platforms or release dates yet except to expect it in 2010. I’m saying this better be a downloadable game (which it would have to be… right?) and it better be fun because I’ve already washed my hands on Sonic but this announcement gives me new hope.

Lord its nice to see something with my childhood hero that isn't covered in some gimmick.
Yeah, no kidding. I love the old (real) games. These days I'm more expecting Sonic Joins the Army, Sonic Time Traveler, or (cringe) Sonic Fitness featuring anthropomorphic swimsuit unlockables. They either proved nothing beats the original or anything else is just stupid.

This will only work for me if they use sprites albeit higher definition sprites ala. Street Fighter HD Remix on PSN and XBLA. I do not want it to look like it's running on Unreal Engine 3.5 or something that gives games this plastic gloss. I just want simple side scrolling fun with an updated retro feel. Though somehow I feel it will be more 2.5D like the latest Sonic game did, it was 2D but it had 3D depth and it doesn't work. If I am to buy this it has to look like Sonic is running on textured paper like in Genesis/MegaDrive games.
