ResumeStaff Article: Favorite Movie Tie-Ins

et2600-thebestpart

This seems like a topic that is doomed before any of the writers responded, but with all the bad movie games out there, their are some that actually are fun to play. ResumePlay digs as far back as possible to compile a list of our favorite games based on movies, and yes they do exist. Let us know what you think and point us in the direction of other movie games as well.

The Punisher

I’ve little to no knowledge of tie-ins, as I generally try to avoid them like the plague that they usually are, but I do know one decent tie-in. The Punisher. A thrd person shooter that followed the ploys of it’s movie, which wasn’t too bad, and had some decent gameplay to boot. Of course the innovative and bloody brilliant death scenes where also a plus. Who can’t enjoy shoving grown men’s heads into; fans, furnaces, gears, sharks, eels, concrete, drills and pretty much every single hazardous thing on earth with a “Do not touch” sign slapped on it and if that isn’t enough then how about nailing a man to a wall by the eyes? Oh yes the world of Frank Castle is a voilent one, but I’ll be damned if it ain’t a fun one. Only one question is left, who would win between James Earl Cash & Castle? There’s something I’d pay to see.

Star Wars – Arcade

This is a bit of a hard question. There are as many movie games as there are blades of grass and most of them suck. However, I do have a select few that I love, and the greatest being the Star Wars Game for Arcade. Created back in 1983, it was a vector 3d arcade platform where your replay over and over the scene in Episode 4 where the Death Star is destroyed. It wasn’t so much the game however, it’s how the thing makes you feel. The machine is designed to feel like a cock pit of an x-wing; sound bites of Luke and R2-D2 play periodically and are nothing short of amazing. There are a select few things that change each time that you destroy the Death Star; more tie-fighters, some tower battles, and the difficulty increases, but I was never really good enough to get too far into the game. If you find this in the back of some dusty old Pizza joint or pool hall, do yourselves a favor and spend a quarter…. or 20.

Chronicles of Riddick

The latest trend of old gen remakes for new gen consoles is alive in my pick. The Chronicles of Riddick games are definitely the boss of movie based games. Excluding Star Wars titles like KOTOR and Battlefront, the Chronicles of Riddick is widely known as one of the VERY FEW movie based games. Anymore these types of games are people’s ways of whoring out their movie for those last few bucks. Did anyone even play the Iron Man game, or the latest G.I. Joe game? Thought not. If you did, go home. While my pick is not exactly the plot of the movies, the stories are related to the movie plots and they have Vin Diesel’s voice as Riddick still. I can really appreciate that, Samuel L. is why Afro Samurai is my runner up. What’s better is that Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena came coupled with a copy of Escape From Butcher Bay it’s Xbox predecessor revamped for full next gen power. I know right?!

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

My favorite true movie tie-in game would be X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Many have berated the game for its short run-time and schizophrenic story, but I believe the game made up for all its faults with an incredibly fun, visceral combat system. Taking heavy inspiration from the God of War games, and many others of their ilk, the game may not have been the most creative of movie tie-ins released, but I believe it stands head and shoulders above almost all others.

Goldeneye 007

Rosenberg – My favorite movie-game would have to be 007-Goldeneye for N64. This game pretty much originated and set in stone all the great multi-player FPS games we have today. The storyline was fantastic, the controls were awesome and the graphics(for the time) were pretty good. You could never get tired of using the golden gun during story-mode, and there was always the one person that used Oddjob in multi-player, making it almost impossible to shoot him. Countless hours of my life were lost in this game, and many hours of school were missed. Plus, it kicks the crap out of 95% of movies games to date.

Yaghoubi – I’m sure a lot of you will agree with me on this when I say the greatest movie tie-in game was GoldenEye 007 for the N64. Where do I begin when it comes to this game? I guess we can start with it’s influence. This was the first major successful console based FPS. The N64, Playstation, and Sega Saturn all had first person shooters before this game, and people had been playing them on the PC for years. This was the one game that made developers realize that if done correctly, FPS could work on a console. So all you out there who play Halo religiously, you have Rare to thank for it. In visuals, it had stellar 3D graphics for the time, tons of detailed backgrounds, and it proved the power of the N64. In audio, it had an awesome soundtrack of familiar James Bond music updated for modern times. Lastly, it had gameplay and lasting appeal like no other game before it. I can’t count how many hours myself and my middle school buddies logged in 4-player deathmatch laying proximity mines in the library stacks or racing to get to the Golden Gun first in the Aztec temple. On top of that, it had plenty of villains and henchmen to unlock like Oddjob, Mayday, and my favorite, Jaws. And yet still, you could go back to all of the levels and beat them in various times to unlock all sorts of cheat modes. To this day, I’m sure this game holds a special place in the heart of many gamers.

Aladdin – Sega
aladdin
In all my years of playing video games, there has only been one game that I have played and enjoyed that is based on a movie, and that game is Aladdin for the Sega Genesis. This game closely followed the Disney movie of the same name and appeared on five different systems. The game sports some great music and levels, and the Cave of Wonders level, where you must fly out of the cave on the carpet and avoid lava, is one of the hardest levels of any game I have played.
