5 Uncomfortable Moments in Gaming

Videogames truly can be considered a form of art. Like most art forms, games are often successful in evoking emotion from gamers from all backgrounds. Typically games are praised for delivering these emotions, whether it be thrills, tears, or laughs, but there are a handful of games that (hopefully unintentionally) make us squirm with discomfort. This is a list of five of them.

Number 5: Symphony of the Night Ending – Credits

\”I am the Wind\”

All right, before you get your knickers in a twist, let me state that I love this game. It’s easily in one of my top 20 favorite games of all time.  Okay, that’s out of the way. What the hell is up with this ending? Specifically, I’m talking about the credits. Why am I the only one in the world to bring this up, anyway? When “I am the Wind” begins to play, I find myself more baffled than when I first saw “The Happening”. I had a similar question in mind in both instances, however: “How the hell did this happen?”. With a game filled with some seriously wicked gothic tunes and some neo-classical guitar riffs… why end with a song that sounds like it was sang by Whitney Houston? It’s hard to really savor Alucard’s badassery with this song going on in the background. Seriously, if I’m embarrassed to listen to a song in public, I’m not sure I want it in my Castlevania.

Yeah. These are my jams. I also like Celine Dion.

Yeah. These are my jams. I also like Celine Dion.

Number 4: Katamari Damacy: King of All Cosmos

King in all his flamboyant glory. Doing pilates. Yikes.

King in all his flamboyant glory. Doing pilates. Yikes.

It was a toss up whether to put the King on the list or not, because his brand of humor is pretty damn hilarious. However, he can be just as creepy as Burger King’s King at times, and his outfit is twice as scary as he prefers to wear purple spandex pants with a renaissance neck cuff. I mean the man shoots rainbows out of his mouth. If that doesn’t make you make you do a double-take, then take just one of his infamous quotes: “This sky is not pretty at all. It’s rough and masculine. Possibly sweaty.” Yep.

Number 3: Any time that Bondage guy from Killer 7 makes an appearance.

Oh. My. Sweet. Lord. I am so uncomfortable right now.

Oh. My. Sweet. Lord. I am so uncomfortable right now.

There’s one thing you should know about the game Killer 7: It. Is. Weird.

If the above picture seems utterly bizarre to you in any way, shape, or form… that’s because it is. There’s no way to explain it, and it won’t make any more sense if you play through the game yourself. This entire game is like a David Lynch film on acid. I’ve tried to find metaphors for the characters and story elements presented in the game and nearly wet my pants. This ‘Bondage guy’ has a name but, thankfully, my brain’s mechanism for repressing memories kicked in and I’ve entirely forgotten it and his purpose in the game (besides weirding the hell out you). All you need to know is this guy is in a bondage suit whispering to you behind a ‘I’m gonna rape you finger’ and… what the hell… are his eyelids sewn shut? Yep. They are. Fantastic.

2. Cho Aniki Series. All of it…

They seem entirely too happy.

They seem entirely too happy.

You all knew it was coming. I’m pretty much FORCED to put this into this list. If any of you have heard of this game, you already know why. This game tries hard to make you feel awkward. I mean… according to Wikipedia.org “…series references homosexuality and gay sex more directly and more often than perhaps any other video game series in history.” Yeah. I think the oily bodybuilder versions of Ace and Gary from the Ambiguously Gay Duo might have given that away. I’m no homophobe, but don’t expect to see this anywhere near my console. Or computer. Or life.  Man anything more awkward than this has to make a gamer feel really, really uncomfortable…

1. Final Fantasy X – Tidus and Yuna Decide to Laugh Like Damned Fools

How can anything beat Cho Aniki? Well, here you have it. This is, without a doubt, the most awkward moment in gaming I have ever experienced. At least Cho Aniki intended to be bizarre, awkward, and predictably uncomfortable (and gay, oh so gay). This scene has bothered me in ways I didn’t think a game could, not to mention a Final Fantasy game. I am not sure I can ever play this game through again for fear of running into this scene. This is the Napoleon Dynamite of the videogame world. It probably concreted Tidus as my least favorite Final Fantasy ‘hero’, although his outfit doesn’t help. No pictures can do this awkwardness justice, so I’ve included the youtube link.

Tidus and Yuna Laughing. Like Damned Fools

It might be just the voice actors that led this scene to its demise, but something is telling me the Japanese isn’t much better. Don’t agree with my number 1 choice? Try playing through this scene with a friend or family member around and try to explain to them you LIKE this game. Do it.

Okay. Maybe this DOES match the awkwardness.

Okay. Maybe this DOES match the awkwardness.

There you have it, a list of five uncomfortable gaming moments. I know you all won’t agree with me, but it’s an opinion piece. There are lots of games out there much worse, I’m sure, they just don’t come to mind at the moment. Thankfully.

that was a fun read, can't disagree :)

One of the most uncomfortable moments I've ever seen in a game was recently when I was playing The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. In the Dark Athena section, you talk to a character (can't remember his name) who is locked in a prison cell. He speaks at length and in detail about how he wants to rape and kill a female inmate a few cells down as soon as they get out. Kinda found it hard to finish the game after that encounter.

Glad you liked it! I'm new to Resumeplay, but will be continuing to write articles weekly. Stay tuned!

A bit predictable, this scene had been mentioned over and over again. Furthermore: in the context of the story, it's actually not that bizarre (although I have to agree with you that you wouldn't want a family member walk in during the forced laugh)

  6. Vladislav says:

Man, why is homosexuality so embarrasing to Americans? Sheesh, have your oppinion but don't force it on the rest of the World. Wow, it's sooo cool going to army and invading other people's countries. Shooting arabs etc… Nothing embarrasing about that, heh Americans?

“Try playing through this scene with a friend or family member around and try to explain to them you LIKE this game. Do it.”

Been there. I tried to convince my girlfriend that it was a great game and after some negotiation I got her to play it together with me. She wasn't really impressed since she's not really into RPG's, so when this particular scene came along…. Let's just say that me trying to laugh it off was more awkward than the in-game scene and we've never played the game together since.

  8. tcsenzei says:

Ey Vladislav lighten up dude, just laugh about it
    LIKE TIDUS N YUNA
But seriously tnX NathanGra i forgot all about that scene
    that was sum weird sh*t
But nuthin i repeat NUTHANG is as weird as Cho aniki………………
    Nuthinnnnn

  9. NathanGra says:

No problem, man. Hope you enjoyed it. Yeah, Cho Aniki is hard to beat when it comes to weird gaming.

  10. NathanGra says:

My number 1 pick had nothing to do with homosexuality, actually. Sorry you feel that way about America, but America actually has a wide and accepted homosexual community (especially in the entertainment business). Thanks for the comment.

  11. potedude says:

One of the Alex Kidd games had guys shooting things out of their arse's. That was a bit gross.

  12. NathanGra says:

    Thanks! Hope you enjoyed reading.

Cho Aniki Series. What the hell were they thinking?

  14. Vladislav says:

Would you laugh about Cho Aniki if there were two girls and not two men pictured? I'm saying that it's weird to you because you live in America where they teach you it's cool to go to army and kill Arabs and since gays don't like to kill, they teach you gays are weird and an embarrasment. You're no more than a f*****' zombie man. I'm sorry to spoil your fun like this but I can't lighten up since I'm absolutely sick of Americans and their “way of life” that they're trying to force down my throat for the past 10 years. I DON'T want your kind of freedom, I don't want your loans and money, your managers and bankers, your G-MO crops and your culture that finds love embarrasing. Leave us alone. (Yes, this time I'm the one invading your website but at least I don't hold a gun against your face)

  15. Vladislav says:

Number 2, 3, 4 and 5 did. That's 4:1 man. And gays are not even allowed to marry in all of America so don't give me that “accepted community” PR talk. You welcome.

  16. Andi_Bailey says:

Is it weird for you to go on about equality while bashing Americans over one article that you don't agree on? In fact, i don't think there's anything stating where he's from anywhere in sight.

So you read this.. assumed because he pointed out that it was AWKWARD to play a game with such a theme that he was American? Then decided to bash him because of it with your main argument being equality..

“gays don't like to kill”.. So now your not only assuming on articles, your also assuming on sexual preference? The reason there's still instances of what your trying to call him out on is because people like you cant accept that in order for there to be equality you have to be treated the same in ALL area's, not just the ones you like. These games were awkward, look at the picture and tell me it doesn't look weird…

Were all people, were all different, so take your shit somewhere else.

I wish I was as cool as you, truly.

  17. mau64 says:

    I love you Andi lol

  18. NathanGra says:

Actually, I'm going to have to call you on looking for things that aren't actually there. My number 5 choice doesn't have anything to do with homosexuality. If you've played SOTN you'd know the song sticks out like a sore thumb, and if you're so inclined, you can try to find in that paragraph where I say otherwise. As for the Killer 7 choice, I stated clearly that the man gives me nightmares, not that he wants my no-no parts. Bondage suits are just as often used in heterosexual encounters as homosexual, friend, I'm just not sure I want them in my videogame. So, it's like 2:3, actually. And hey, thanks again.

  19. Vladislav says:

Well, I just wanted to troll because Americans killed my father (bombing a CIVILLIAN target), I kinda troll whenever I get the chance.

That aside, he IS American, that's obvious.

Gays generally don't like guns and killing other soldiers, that's not an assumption, that's a fact. They generally find soldiers sexy.

I wasn't talking about equality, I was talking about you folks being brainwashed into thinking gays are weird. It could have been any other social group that your leaders dislike.

    Thank god we're different ;)

No need to be sarcastic man, you ARE cool, you think gays are awkward and you or your parents pay your army via taxes. I'm the one who's not cool because I'd rather see people kiss than kill eachother and love is soooo uncool these days.

That picture does look wierd because such things are rarely seen in western culture which is media-dominant. No wonder that game is not an american game.

Why would girls have large muscles? Than they'd be girls with masculine traits. I see two men with large muscles and muscles are appropriate for males. The equivalent would be two girls with feminine traits. So let me rephrase my question: “Would you laugh about Cho Aniki if there were two feminine girls and not two masculine men pictured?”

  20. NathanGra says:

I humbly have to bow to Andi's comment. I couldn't say it any better if I tried. I will add, however, that you have a terrible bias and a terrible habit of assuming, Vlad. And, as the saying goes, you're making an ass out of you and me. More so you, though. “Gays don't like to kill”? I could dissect the hell out of that, but I'm just going to pull the Jeffrey Dahmer card (look him up). And you don't want 'our kind of freedom' (Whatever the hell that means)? Well, I don't want your prejudice, regurgitated hate mongering. No offense, of course. Take care, now.

  21. Vladislav says:

I think that song is too feminine for you and you find it embarrasing. It's not your fault, you're taught to think that way. As for bondages, we all know those are mostly associated with gays as are other things like that.

  22. Vladislav says:

    Well ban me then.

  23. NathanGra says:

No need. You've got you're opinions, I've got mine. Hopefully you'll like my next piece more. See you 'round.

  24. Vladislav says:

Just before you ban me :) Answer me one question, but be absolutely honest, okay?

Which game cover would make you feel more embarrased if you had it in your room…a cover picturing two guys kissing or a cover picturing two guys holding guns against eachoter.

That sorta explains what I was talking about. Perverted morality values – love VS war, kiss VS kill…etc

I think that anyone kissing (or hugging as in Cho Aniki) anyone else with mutual consent should not in any case be considered more embarrasing than people killing eachother.

    Sadly, it is.

  25. NathanGra says:

    Simply put:
    Feminism and/or feminine =/= gay.
    Bondage =/= gay.

    That's all I'm saying.

  26. Vladislav says:

I liked your article because it made me think about it. As you can see :) I just don't like the way things are. I'll admit I also find Cho Aniki embarrasing but I don't like having that kind of “moral value” in my mind. No hard feelings.

    cya

  27. Andi_Bailey says:

For starters, I never said I thought anyone was anything, I merely stated what was written in the article you were referring to, which was infact “Awkward” or more so “Uncomfortable”.

And to keep up with the profiling based on region, I'm Canadian, which – and correct me if I'm wrong – are generally known as peaceful people. Just because I don't think its ok for you to slander somebody's country over an article on the internet, doesn't mean I support war. Infact, its comments like the ones your making that led to war, and other horrible things.

THINK before you TYPE. If you can't do that, then leave, that simple.

To answer your question, yes, if the picture was two girls, portrayed the way those to men are, I WOULD LAUGH. THERE FACES ARE FUNNY LOOKING, THE OVERALL CONCEPT IS CHUCKLE WORTHY. This, I am sure, was the intention of the game.

Get over it. Its just words, and images that he didn't even create himself.

  28. jackpatton says:

Not sure we even want to know :/

@Vladislav: Cho Aniki was built by the japanese with the intent to make the gamer feel awkward when they play. I'm Irish, born in Navan Co.Meath & raised in Belfast Co.Antrim and I personally don't feel any of this stuff your saying. My girlfriend is bisexual, if that was a problem I wouldn't be with her. Several members of my family are currently active members of the PSNI & one died on the frontlines in 2005 of suspected friendly fire. Am I bashing this site for it?

America has it's way, all countries do. Ireland approve of social partnerships which is basically gay marriage, but the church is too damn biggotted to officially see it. You're anger is mis-directed, God isn't American (No matter what some people think =p).

  29. tcsenzei says:

Damn son i leave for a week to come back
and see Vladislav bein SkooooLd by Andi_Bailey >_<
Seriously dude i have nunthin else ta say Andi_Bailey done told ya boy
Ow right n u R kinda racist cuz im from Holland
We Smoke weed instead of make war ;)
