“Demo Play” Details Revealed

Nintendo’s UK site released details on the “demo play” feature announced that will first show up in New Super Mario Bros for the Wii. This feature allows the player to watch a video of how to get through the stage and allow them to “jump in” at any point of watching this. This was what most gamers thought how it was going to be used and they have confirmed it.

Here is an excerpt from their website:”New Super Mario Bros. Wii is also the first Nintendo game to feature a dynamic help system, which allows you to access a mode showing how a level can be completed if you are stuck. The best thing about this mode is that you are free to jump into the action you’re watching on screen at any time!”

So the actuality is that… Yes, there is a win button (even though it is a video) for the new Mario game being released this year. In my opinion, this is an odd game to roll this out with because it all boils down to watching the game scroll to the right for you (or to the left in that one weird stage that every side-scroller throws at you.) I understand why so many gamers are getting upset, but the fact all boils down to is if you don’t want to use it… don’t hit the button. Just like when games had an easy mode, and a very easy mode, just don’t use it if you don’t want to. You can read more about the game on their official site here.

I think the thing that annoys many gamers is not that it's a “win” button, but that the children, those small bundles of joy will become lazy. I recall spending hours and days trying to master games like Sonic, Super Mario, Castlevania, MegaMan and others. There was no “win” button and already I can tell you now I am a worse gamer now than I was then. Games are now are dumb fun, there is no challenge anymore. It's all because children age 3 – 16 for the most part are scared to persevere they give up if the game isn't easy.

This feature is just one more step to making my games extremely dull as eventually one developer is just going to say, “why add a “win” button when we can make the protagonist invincible”. I mean UbiSoft already did this with Prince of Persia the new one I thought would be good until I never died. I just fear that games like Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted, Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden are going to die out, the last of the games that are crushingly hard on hard mode. I already have to contend with the mass casualisation of gaming with the motion controls and the kid friendly graphics, I don't want the game to cuddle me while i'm at it.
