Netflix to PS3 by November

netflix-logoEarly Monday, Sony Corp. and Netflix announced their intentions to launch a PS3 version of the Netflix online video-streaming service already popularized on the Xbox 360.  The service will be free to PS3 owners who hold a Netflix subscription that starts at $9 and eliminates Microsoft’s exclusive arrangement to stream video via a console-specific service.

This announcement comes approximately one year after Microsoft offered its 360 owners and Netflix subscribers the chance to stream movies directly to their consoles.  If the service is anything like the 360 version, users will have the ability to view video in High Definition, provided their internet connection is fast enough.  Sony’s marketing campaign has touted the console as “It Only Does Everything,” and the Netflix deal enables that claim to be further supported.  For Netflix, the move provides an opportunity to add to their already 11 million strong customer base.

To enable the service on the PS3, users will have to insert a Blu-Ray disc from Netflix.  The disc will access the internet and the service will be activated, after which the user can then browse the collection of TV shows and movies that are available to stream.
