Status update on Xbox Live Facebook/Twitter Release

Last week, it was reported on several sites that the Facebook/Twitter/Last.fm update was coming to Xbox Live on Nov 17th. The Update promises, to Xbox Live Gold Members, that players will be able to check/update thier status, invite players to join them via Facebook, post and view pictures, Tweet, and use the wildly popular online radio Last.Fm

Unfortunately for Xbox Users, the release date has been replaced with the cryptic ‘coming to Xbox autumn 2009′

The update certainly brings to mind the possibilities available from connecting such powerful social networks as Facebook, Twitter, and Xbox Live. It also brings to mind some of the possible downfalls, such as the probable need of a USB keyboard to type at any length on these networks, unless using the controller to type is your thing. Just how much can one really do on these updates? Why was the release date advertised, and almost immediately removed? When will the public preview become available?

Xbox.com states the update is still being beta tested, and that a November release is still hopeful. The Public preview should be released mid-late October, but no word on that, either.

We can, as we have come to learn from past experiences with these big updates, only wait for the final word. One piece of Advice: don’t hold your breath.

Preview program for this update is officially live. Major Nelson announced it on Major's Minute today (10/15). Go to http://www.xbox.com/xboxliveupdate to sign up with Microsoft Connect. Then wait for the email or download prompt on the 360.
