The Low-Down on Dead Rising 2.

A little over three years ago, Capcom infected the United States with the living dead in the form of a challenging, hack and slash, survival-horror game known as Dead Rising. In a small town of Colorado, the dead start coming back to life, and a cool, easy-to-like photo-journalist named Frank West is dropped off on top of the mall to cover the happening. However, with insane serial killers hiding out in the mall, injured mall walkers, and about 53,000 zombies…Frank bites off more than he can chew. After a huge success from the game, Capcom gave the green light to develop a second game due out for the first quarter of 2010. I’m sure most gamers can expect another repetitive survival hack-and-slash sequel, but after digging into some research, I’ve gathered some great insight on what Capcom is going to give us to keep us hooked on the Dead Rising franchise.

This game apparently takes place in the small, but flashy Fortune City a few years after the Willamette incident. This time, without our lovable Frank West, but a new track-jacket sporting character by the name of Chuck. Not a whole lot has been released about the storyline of single player mode, but from what I understand, Chuck is a contestant on a popular new zombie-based reality show called TIR (Terror Is Reality). The game puts people up against the undead and the person that survives the longest and kills the most zombies is a winner in the game. Like I said, details are wishy-washy…but apparently there are reason unknown on why Chuck is a special guest on the new horrifying reality show. The trailer and videos have shown us a plethora of new weapons, including double-chainsaw staffs and trophy swordfish.

I think the biggest thing to draw the fans into the sequel will be the multi-player. Since the game will be launching on both Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, the online multi-player is going to be huge. There’s going to be competitive multi-player pieces to the reality show where contestants face off against each other in games like “Ramsterball”, where you get into giant metal hamster-balls and roll over the walking dead, and other games like “Pounds of Flesh”, where you put deer antlers on a hockey helmet and run around a room filled with zombies. The contestant with the most pounds of flesh on their antlers (weighed by a scale) wins.

This coming year, Capcom is going to be banking on their sequels to be their money makers (aren’t they always?). The first quarter will the first step in making an impact on 2010 with the releases of Lost Planet 2 and Dead Rising 2. However, because of the repetitiveness, time limitations,  and crappy save options…I just couldn’t spark my interest past a few hours of game-play. I’ve heard praises and love from people that have unlocked the infinite mode for hours of zombie slaughter, but that just doesn’t do it for me. So unless the multi-player and storyline jumps out at me, It probably won’t be a game I pay $60+ for. But I’ll keep you posted on news as it comes to me!
