Review: Monkey Island—The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood

The Caribbean journey is nearing its climatic finish. We’ve followed our protagonist across the seas as he collects the items he needs to get La Esponja Grande. New friends and new enemies have shown their faces. The question: what can go wrong? A lot, as this episode proves. Poor Guybrush just can’t catch a break. Click the linky for my review.
The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood picks up from the end of the third episode. Morgan LeFlay has betrayed our hero, and is now rowing him from the Screaming Narwhal to Flotsam Island. The scientific de Singe is rubbing his greedy hands together, anxiously awaiting Threepwood’s arrival. As they land…the pirates that live on Flotsam Island appear, taking Threepwood into the pirate court. Of course, since it’s a pirate court of law, who really knows what Threepwood is ACTUALLY being charged with.
Believe it or not, Pirates are far from honorable in the Court of Law
Gameplay…where to begin? It’s exactly the same. Using the keys, you guide Threepwood around the environment collecting various items, chit-chatting with the characters in the background, and trying to find clues for your next objective. The movement is finally fixed though! If you go over my other reviews, you’ll notice that I constantly complain about the movement and the fact that it’ll try to walk in other directions. I did not find a single occurrence of this whenever I was playing this fourth episode. Hopefully it stays this way for the fifth episode.
The sound quality of this episode remained about the same as all of the others. The “theme songs” for each character as you talk to them remains intact, as does the pirate-y tune of Flotsam Island. The music is what you expect, and there isn’t much to say about it.
The setting…now this was a mixed boon. I was somewhat happy to be back in Flotsam, with it being from the first episode and all. However, this was also a negative in my book. All of the areas, aside from two, were ones that you already covered from the first episode. It was nice to see the changes since being there, but it was mostly the same.
This is not his happy face.
At first I thought that the pop culture references that I had loved from the first episode had returned, but they quickly slacked off after hearing about “State ARRRRM Insurance.” The episode was still quite funny, one of my favorite sequences being a battle between Morgan Le Flay and Threepwood’s wife, Elaine. Twas a cat fight indeed!
Aside from the semi-cliff hanger like ending, there isn’t a whole lot that can be said about this episode. If you’ve played one Monkey Island, you’ve just about played them all. I liked this episode a lot more than I did Episodes 2 and 3, take that how you will. Over all, if you’ve keeping up, don’t miss out on this episode. The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood gets four pox-infected pirates out of five.
