Spike Video Game Awards Results and Trailers
For the first time last night I watched the Spike Video Game Award show. I had avoided it up until now and the only thing that pulled me in to watch this year were some of the surprise game announcements. There were quite a few first look trailers from some very big games coming in 2010. For the entire list of award winners and to check out the trailers hit the JUMP!
So as far as the actual awards go, the show was pretty lame. There are so many categories that basically every game nominated wins at least one award. Some notables were Rocksteady and Batman Arkham Asylum winning Studio of the Year and Uncharted 2 Cleaned up with Best Graphics, Best PS3 Game, and of course Game of the Year. Modern Warfare 2 wrapped up Best Shooter and Best Multiplayer Game. On the PC front Dragon Age Origins wrapped up Best PC Game and Best RPG. All in all the winners were extremely predictable and everyone from Mike Tyson to Stevie Wonder presented awards.
So now onto my favorite part of the show…the trailers. The show couldn’t have started off any better than showing the next Batman installment from RockSteady. The trailer showed Gotham in ruins and suggested that Arkham Has Moved. Sounds to me like this game with take place in the streets of Gotham. Which should make things very interesting considering it will be a much more open and large world compared to the hallways and corridors of Arkham. The next notable trailer was easily Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2. The trailer showed what looked like the character from the first game struggling between the light and dark sides of the force. Think those two little conscious devils on your shoulder, except swap them out for Yoda and Darth Vader. I am not for certain it is the same character given the way the last game ended but either way the game seems to be going for the ever prominent bigger, better, more badass sequel route. One of the new IP trailers that looked very interesting was Spec Ops, which looks to be a over the shoulder shooter with a huge open world element. Crackdown 2 and Medal of Honor Modern Combat looked promising but really didn’t impress me all that much. The last trailer shown was Halo Reach. The trailer is typical Bungie with TONS of easter eggs hidden in the trailer. The first thing I noticed were the graphics, they look a lot better. Another huge improvement are the human faces of the characters, they look so much better than previous games. The trailer shows 5 spartans and another labeled “Lone Wolf”, which will likely be the character that you the player takes control of. Each of the spartans seem to have their own speciality/style and one is also female. All in all I thought the trailer was good in doing what its supposed to, get me more excited about the game and also have a bunch of easter eggs hidden for me to find frame by frame.

Amazed at how Uncharted 2 picked up Game of the Year. Modern Warfare fanboys just got served methinks.

WOlverine won awards. Bleh. And…I'm gonna say it….yep…gonna say it. Fuck Street Fighter 4. Fuck it. It was awful. I played Street Fighter IV 17 years ago. You know why I played Street Fighter IV 17 years ago? Because Street Fighter IV IS Street Fighter II…with better graphics, a couple new characters, and ONE new combat mechanic. Seriously, I understand now why Capcom had trouble counting past 2.
Well done Naughty Dog, didn't care who won so long as it wasnt MW2. Good game, enjoyable, but not as good as made out.
