Super Street Fighter IV: Mode Trailer

Capcom release another trailer here highlighting their intentions for the latest add-on to the Street Fighter IV series, but is it really enough to be worthy of it’s own gaming spotlight? Street Fighter games have always been known for their updates; so this is indeed keeping with tradition, and it was inevitable to happen once more. Many would argue that these features aren’t enough to warrant their own game, and that Capcom should of considered the DLC option. While that statement has truth to it, this isn’t the end of the content; more shall follow in the coming months as has already in fact. It is all a matter of opinion concerning this argument, but one thing is certain; the game has a lot more to prove that it’s predecessor had to this time round.

The Tekken Factor: First Impressions

Well here we go again, another established fighting game in the beat em up genre making another appearance within the same year as another fighting game in the beat em up genre making another appearance……still with me? Basically what I’m trying to promote here is the fact that Tekken is back with it’s sixth instalment in the series (not including Dark Resurrection), and looks to make up for lost time in order to compete with February’s release of Street Fighter IV. From first impressions it plays and looks exactly how a Tekken has always done, the characters have retained their signature moves, the red mist hit detection is again present, even down to the fact that all of the characters from past games have minced their way back into the arena; added with a few new fresh-faced punching bags, guess it should be the best of all right? Well lets run down a few of the newest key features from the game that I have come across so far, and have the feedback coming from me; a simple boy with his trusty laptop sitting in a kitchen with milk and cookies, ah the simple pleasures.

The Retro Vault: Dragon’s Lair

Had you been loitering around arcades back in 1983, you’d have seen an astonishing looking game called Dragon’s Lair. Grabbing some change from the kiosk, you’d immediately rush over to the machine, shovel in all your cash and quickly realise why no one else was playing it… Dragon’s Lair’s incredibly cartoon-like visuals (created by ex-Disney animator Don Bluth) came with a very high price – gameplay.

Great Game Bosses Vol: 2 – The Great Mighty Poo (Conkers Bad Fur Day)

What do you get if you cross a bad-mouthed squirrel and a pile of singing faeces?, a gaming moment that won’t be soon forgotten of course. The cutesy platformer gone bad, Conkers Bad Fur Day was certainly not the game many had anticipated. With scenes inspired by Saving Private Ryan and The Matrix, it wasn’t without it’s stand-out moments, but there was to be one that gamers tend to remember above all others – The Great Mighty Poo. +Continue Reading

Great Game Bosses Vol: 1 – Bob The Fish (Earthworm Jim 2)

When the first game in the series had pitted our invertebrate hero against such unlikely felons as a bounty-hunting crow, a heap of rubbish and an evil cat named Evil, we weren’t expecting anything close to sanity from the sequel. Suffice to say, Earthworm Jim 2 exceeded all our expectations, confronting the player with a boss battle so absolutely farcical that no arch-enemy has since come close. +Continue Reading

Mario Kart Wii: Nintendo’s Space Based Competition Now On

compe_2009_0615_2

All the way from Super Mario Galaxy, it’s the Spiky Topmen! I’m sure your all wondering where I’m going with this, so allow me to elaborate. Nintendo have set up a Mario Kart Wii competition, it runs for ten days; though from this point it’s seven so you best get started, and requires knocking off some pesky Spiky Topmen off the edge of the Galaxy Arena as fast as you can, but be careful not to fall off yourself when the stage starts collapsing, otherwise it’s game over; damn there’s always a catch. I haven’t played on Mario Kart Wii for quite a while now, so it certainly needs options like this to keep the interests up as downloadable content is not within reach for the Wii, so head over to the Mario Kart channel and check it out, as well as other online options. I’m headed there right now so be right back.

Nintendo: Older Link, Minus Sword?

I did hear about Shigeru Miyamoto’s little chat concerning the next Zelda game last week, but it hasn’t really registered in my mind until just this second. It should be considered blasphemy as I am a HUGE fan of the series, especially since his N64 outing Ocarina of Time where I truely became entranced by just about everything the game and series had to offer.

Now there had been rumors going around about a new game on the Wii for quite while now, but after Link’s no show at E3 this year the rumor had died down a bit as both Mario and Metroid were getting the undivided attention this time round. Miyamoto’s mention of Link in an older form, and the possibility of no Master Sword in an interview concerning the next game have revitalized the speculations once again, but only this picture of Link and a mysterious creature is all we have to go by for now. I can sense a slight change in the air for this series so watch this space.

Tekken: Sixth times a charm?

I’m all for that lovable follow-up to a video game productively named ‘the sequel’, so long as it adds new experiences in the field of game-play, narrative, even the visual presences; but for the beat ‘em up genre it’s a pretty tricky mission to accomplish. Men and women duking it out for the prestige title of best fighter in the world, how do you create a narrative around that without the possibility of it become stale? Well for over ten years the Tekken series has managed to keep the public coming back for more, whilst keeping with the same formula that has made it a gaming icon, but I guess that is what makes the beat ‘em up genre so different to others, a few new characters here, a dab of new stages there, and presto a new game……….sorta.

Wii Vitality Sensor: Nintendo Get More Health Conscience

Certainly one of the strangest presentations at E3 this year was the announcement of the Wii Vitality Sensor, a trap gadget you shove on your finger and takes readings from your body’s inner workings, are Nintendo becoming a bunch of health nuts or is it just me?

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Crossover Chaos

Now, I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t at all interested in any fighting game crossovers involving a series that I know nothing about, so I won’t. Even though this particular game does indeed involve a series I know about as much as Mario’s waistline, I’m a sucker for over the top Japanese anime crossed with my favourite gaming genre, and it’s just been made that extra bit sweeter with the crossover involving my favourite game series, Street Fighter, so I best get researching into this Tatsunoko, and Mario’s waistline while I’m at it.
