Games This Week: January 18th – January 24th

This week in games brings a plethora of titles I have never heard of. The biggest game this week is probably Dark Void coming out for 360, PS3 and PC. Another big game is Death By Cube developed by Square Enix. For you PSP owners out there you get your first chance to play Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. So there you go, this week isn’t bad but next week will be even better with Mass Effect 2!

MLB 10 The Show and MLB 2K10 Get Dated

Baseball season is fast approaching and so are the games that simulate the sport. Easily the best baseball game available, MLB The Show is going to be releasing the same day as its main competition the 2K series on March 2nd. The Sony exclusive game also got its cover athlete in Joe Mauer who is the Catcher for the Minnesota Twins. I personally love The Show and even though I don’t own a PS3 the PSP version is far and away better than anything the 2K series does on ANY console.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 Review

If you’re an active Marvel fan, then you know what the Civil War, how it came about, and how it went down. However, the storyline isn’t the only thing that seriously lacked in the sequel I had been looking forward to since the first game’s release. With every level I played in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, I gained more and more disappointment. Coming from a true Marvel fan, here are the reasons I think Activision should create time-travel and go back to stage one of developing this game. *Warning: There may be spoilers from the game.* +Continue Reading

kratos-sackboy-little-big-planet-screenshot-large

The videogame industy has been saturated with a variety of well known characters, from annoying to cream-your-pants awesome. However, the most memorable characters are often the ones that you despise, yet can’t help but admit are badass. There is just something about the dynamic that compliments one another, like prepubecent teens and anime.  This list, on behalf of Resumeplay and myself, presents to you five badass videogame characters who are clearly assholes.

NBA 2K10 Review

header

So in the tenth year of the NBA 2K series, we were promised something special, and something that would knock us off our feet from prior games. Sure, I know what you’re thinking…”this is a basketball game, how much different could it get?”. Well the truth is, the games are very different. I’m a huge sports fan, and at the top of that chain lies the National Basketball Association. I pay attention to the smallest of details…and when playing sports games, I want to feel the combination of real-life presentation, and the excitement of edge-of-your-seat action in fast paced game scenarios. After a quick decision in deciding I liked NBA 2K9 over NBA Live 2009, it was a shoe-in that I would buy NBA 2K10. Here are my thoughts on it. +Continue Reading

Horrible Game Worlds To Live In

horrible-title

Most people want to escape reality, saying that they would love to live in the world of video games and other fantasy genres of the sort. However not all of the worlds are cupcakes and sunshine, and some are downright deadly to live in. With the current generation filled with games like Fallout and the upcoming Darksiders, I thought I would point out just these few.

Speculation: NBA 2K9 Vs. NBA Live 2009

titleimage

The NBA season starts in October, and aside from maybe Rich, I’m probably the only one on Resume Play that cares. However, it is my job to bring a little bit of sporting games into this nerd fest of a site. Along with the new season comes to releases of NBA Live 2010 and NBA 2K10. I’ve had almost a year of fun and excitement from these games and there is a constant debate about which one is better. Most of the people that side with the live games only play the live games, and likewise with the 2K series. I have owned NBA Live 2009 since the release date, and only just picked up 2K9. I am a dedicated NBA fan and pay attention to lots of small details, so I will take those into count. I think you’ll be surprised by my comparison. I have been a live buyer for the last three years, but before that I was a 2K series buyer, and even before that, I was a live buyer. Here’s my professional Resume Play writer comparison of NBA Live 2009 and NBA 2K9. +Continue Reading

Brains Brains Brains- Part 1 of 2: Zombies in Video Games

Zombies Ate My Neighbors, 1993

Zombies Ate My Neighbors, 1993

Zombie Zombie Zombies Ate My Neighbors because they are an Evil Dead Zombie Nation of Horror Zombies from the Crypt who live Alone in the Dark waiting to get their Zombie Revenge on none other then myself via Flesh Feast (3D I might add). Surely, Doom shall prevail you say! Alas, a Corpse Killer arrives with his Beat Busters to rid me of this CarnEvil. One look and I see the Infected- the Dead Rising up and know it’s no longer Plants vs. Zombies. It’s Brandy vs. Zombies in The Land of the Dead. Little do they know I’ve got the Touch of the Dead…I am the Zombie Master and Zombie Wrangler. This is the Last Stand as I scream ‘Burn Zombie, Burn’ as they will all be Dead by Zombie- I am one of their own. This will be a Zombie Massacre and all will be Left 4 Dead. After all- I am the Resident Evil. +Continue Reading

The Lasting Effect of the Retro Genres

sam_and_max1
What a year gaming has been for us. We have seen some fantastic new ideas these past couple of years but there is no denying the fact that retro ideas play a huge effect in new concepts. One of the strange things that is happening is the comeback of 2-D fighting games and true adventure games. These genres just recently started showing back up with re-releases and entirely new games to further help keep retro games alive.

The Craft of Games: Open World vs. Linear Storytelling

GTA III Introduced Players to the Idea of an Open World Sandbox

With the dawn of the new century came the dawn of a new console, the Playstation 2. A significant upgrade over its earlier iteration, the system provided developers with the power they needed to develop more involving and expansive games.

Released in 2001, Grand Theft Auto III was the first game to truly harness the power the system had to offer, and create something unique for the time. Leaving behind the 2D boundaries of its earlier brethren, GTA III took the series into 3D, and gave gamers their first true taste of an Open World Sandbox. With the arrival of the new console generation, the idea has been pushed further and further, and more and more classic franchises are taking up the mantle of “Open World Games.” The question is, are Open World Games really the future, or will they forever be hindered by their reduced ability to tell a potent story?
