Mass Effect 2 Review

Elcor Diplomat: “Amazed response, Bioware.  Mass Effect 2 exceeds all expectations.”  Sadly, there isn’t much dialogue from my favorite alien race, the Elcor.  Other than that, Bioware’s sci-fi sequel succeeds resoundingly at creating the same “black, white, or in between” choices that matter, and simultaneously reflect real-life problem solving processes.  The most annoying part of Mass Effect 2, as a reviewer, is this: how do you review a game by running through it as quickly as possible and exploring everything, with the game all the while telling you to slow down and enjoy the rich environments Bioware has created?  What a paradox.  But without further ado, hit the jump for the most anticipated review of 2010 (thus far).

Retro Review: WCW/NWO Revenge – N64

Wrestling games have been an integral part of video gaming. They’ve just always been there. I remember feeling the breakthrough in WWF/WCW games back when Nitro was released on PC, and when World Tour came out on N64. After playing World Tour, I was still craving that little bit more. I wanted behind the scenes fights, I wanted trash talk, and I wanted more characters. Of course this may have been a lot ot expect in 1997, but in 1998 THQ must have thought the same thing when they released what is known to a lot of people as the best wrestling game of all time. +Continue Reading

Retro PC: Personal Nightmare

After several years of not playing it, I decided to play Personal Nightmare again. I remembered the last time I had played this game was a long while back when I was in elementary school. I thought it was cool because it’s a horror game and I love horror. Yes, as plain as that statement may be, I try to play anything that is in the horror genre such as Alone in the Dark and Dangerous Dave. I had these on my Packard Bell and ran them well. Man, I love retro. +Continue Reading

Darksiders Review (Xbox 360)

Darksiders is like a amalgamation of several classic games. It takes freely from such titles as Devil May Cry, God of War, and the entire Zelda Series. Now, many games try to do this, and fail. Darksiders, however, succeeds enough to not only be mentioned, but enough to be entered into the pantheon of great action/puzzle/platformers.

Samorost 2 – Review (PC)

Developed by Amanita Design, Samorost 2 is the sequel to the free browser game Samorost 1. It is a short episodic adventure game where you have to help out this small space gnome seek out his dog after a couple of aliens kidnapped it. It is your job to help this little guy to get his best friend back through different areas of space. The first game and chapter 1 of Samorost 2 are available for free, which I thought was a great idea to get people interested in the story itself. +Continue Reading

Zombie Driver – Review (PC)

header

I usually find myself playing games that have zombies as the main antagonists. Yes, zombies are naturally antagonists, but they weren’t always the bad cannibals we fight here and there in games. They were once human you know. So when I saw Zombie Driver on Steam, I decided that I should play it and see what this game would mean to the zombie lovers out there. Developed by Exor Studios, this single player zombie game puts you in the driver’s seat where you roam a huge city that has been overrun by the human-flesh eating people. +Continue Reading

the-saboteur-e3-2009-16

The scene is a tavern, modest if not danky. Theres a clear tense division at the bar, one end a group of french, the other two irishmen. Everything goes well until a certain topic runs foul and a brutal, but fecking brilliant, brawl ensues. Now enough about the aftermath of the world cup qualifiers, let’s talk about Pandemic’s swansong; The Saboteur.

iHooy – Review (iPhone)

iHooy1_1

Since I sold my soul to AT&T for the iPhone, I’ve been building a collection of apps and games from the infamous Apple App Store. I recently bought a new game named iHooy which was developed by Braineaters, an independent developer in Poland. This game is based on the history of the greatest hero, Hooy Ventura, who has been thrown into an ongoing war against bombiez and is the last line of defense for humanity. Are you up for the challenge? The mission is simple: to destroy bombiez and save innocent citizens. Your weapons of choice are the crumplers; giving you the ability to smash bombiez with a press of a button. +Continue Reading

Review—Gyromancer

500px-Gyromancer_banner

Pop Cap Games and Square Enix made a game.  Pop Cap Games and Square Enix made a game.  POP CAP GAMES AND SQUARE ENIX MADE A GAME!  Now that I’ve gotten that point across, you can imagine my expectations and thoughts behind Gyromancer.  The people that made Peggle and Plant vs. Zombies working together with the creators of Final Fantasy, that is what we call win.  It has to be good, right?

Dreamkiller – Review (PC)

Dreamkiller_scr

I personally love the survival horror genre but I decided to try out something a little different. As I was looking around on Steam, I found Dreamkiller developed by Mindware Studios, which seemed to have an interesting plot. During the beginning cutscene, you are introduced to its main character, Alice Drake, where she explains that she uses her ability of entering dreams to assist her patients. She continues on saying that she sometimes has to remind herself where her mind begins and her patient’s mind ends. If you’ve seen Nightmare on Elm Street 3, the main character Kirsten can bring other people into her dreams. This is basically the same idea but instead of fearing just one child-killing maniac with one-liners, it’s a variety of monsters created by the many phobias that Alice’s patients have. +Continue Reading

Left 4 Dead 2 Review

header

I’ve got friends that say they are “over the zombie fad”. The truth is, zombies have always been an integral part of this society’s horror game and movie industry. I wasn’t impressed with Dead Rising, or the crazy amount of zombie games leading up to it. I liked Resident Evil 4 & 5, but those weren’t exactly zombies, were they? In  2008, Valve finally unleashed a zombie game I was proud to own, although I did have small problems with repetitiveness and shortness in length. These two things were completely fixed in the sequel. Here is my review for quite possibly the best zombie game ever made. +Continue Reading

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 Review

header

If you’re an active Marvel fan, then you know what the Civil War, how it came about, and how it went down. However, the storyline isn’t the only thing that seriously lacked in the sequel I had been looking forward to since the first game’s release. With every level I played in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, I gained more and more disappointment. Coming from a true Marvel fan, here are the reasons I think Activision should create time-travel and go back to stage one of developing this game. *Warning: There may be spoilers from the game.* +Continue Reading

Assassin’s Creed 2: Review

assassins_creed_2_main_resize

How often does a sequel surpass it’s predecessor? In movies and books… rarely ever. In video games, it is perhaps a little more common. To say that Assassin’s Creed II has merely surpassed it’s predecessor would be an enormous understatement. AC2, for those of you who are unfamiliar, is Ubisoft’s highly anticipated sequel to 2007’s Assassin’s Creed. The first Assassin’s Creed met mixed reviews and left many people feeling disappointed. The most recent addition, however, launched last Tuesday and proves to be a more than welcome addition to the series. Read on for our full review of Assassin’s Creed II with a detailed look at what Ubisoft has done right and what they have done wrong.

Review—Phantasy Star Zero

125226-phantasy-star-zero-box-art

I’ve been a long fan of Phantasy Star Online.  While I didn’t come from the days of it on Dreamcast, I put many hours of my life into the GameCube version.  A few years later, I no longer have a GameCube, and the game that I once was borrowing is now gone.  Never really got the chance to play Phantasy Star Universe either, but you could probably imagine my joy once I found out about Phantasy Star Zero on the DS.  Hit the link to find out my thoughts on the newest game into the Phantasy Star series.
