Nintendo DS Still Claiming Records

When February’s NPD numbers released, Nintendo was in for a treat when the Nintendo DS claimed more than 613,000 sales beating out last year’s record of… itself. Yes, the Nintendo DS last February, that’s after the holiday rush where millions were selling every month, took the record from itself which was originally set at 597,000. The Wii didn’t do half bad either selling around 397,000 which actually put it in second place to the Xbox 360 WHOA. So far this year, Nintendo has sold more than 1.9 million pieces of hardware in 2010 alone… in two months! They even have a new console coming out soon with the DSi XL which will be wrapped up in that DS number stated above. Technically, some people might look at that number and realize that it is two different types of DS hardware (Lite, DSi) and will be adding another to help it claim record breaking sales with the XL.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii still holds the top spot at 555,000 followed by Ubisoft’s Just Dance at No. 4 with 275,000 and Wii Sports Resort bundled with Wii MotionPlus at No.5 with 272,000 sold. It seems like everyone by now should have two DS systems and are already reserving their very own XL. Congratulations Nintendo on completely dominating the video game hardware market.

Green Day: Rock Band gets Dated

The newest Rock Band retail game, focused solely on punk-rock group Green Day, is coming on June 8 to all three next-gen consoles. The game will be similar to the Beatles Rock Band, featuring character models of the band members, three-part vocal harmonies, a tour mode focusing on their career, and a large collection of their music.

The game will feature 47 tracks, all of which can be exported to a hard drive for use in the main Rock Band games. There are songs from throughout Green Day’s career, including modern hits like “Americana Idiot,” “Wake Me Up When September End,” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” alongside older songs like “Brain Stew” and “Jaded.” Gamers can also play the 6 previously released DLC tracks in the game with new animations and features.

Some gamers have questioned the choice of Green Day for the new music game, but among punk-rock bands they are definitely one of the biggest. They’ve won multiple Grammy Awards, have multi-platinum records, and are one of the few modern bands featured in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Ohio. Harmonix and MTV call them the “band that jump-started the punk-pop revival and has continued to pave the way for American rock music into the 21st century.” After how long they’ve been around, they certainly have a lot of fans out there.

New Tiger Woods 11 Details & Screenshots

Well, lets go ahead and get the big news out of the way which is the support for the PlayStation 3 Motion Controller. Tiger Woods already has a firm release date of June 8th (My B-day :) ) coming out on the Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, and iPhone. Also included is the game which is the chance to bring home the Ryder Cup; I don’t know much about sports but it seems to be a big deal in the sport of Golf. Tiger Woods seems to be a great game on about any system it comes out for and should continue with this entry. Oh one more thing to note is that Rory McIlroy will be sharing the cover of the game; I’m sure it has nothing to do with the recent scandals surrounding Tiger… I’m sure of it. Check after the break for screenshots from the game and a video showcasing how to use the Wii version with the WiiMote.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 Gameplay Trailer

I haven’t played a Mario game since 64 but this trailer may have just swooned me into playing Galaxy 2. Watch it and see for yourself!

Super Mario Galaxy 2 Screens

Nintendo hasn’t announced a ton of games yet this year but they do have a few heavy hitters with one of those being Super Mario Galaxy 2. Nintendo is sticking with the same formula that sold so well with the first Mario Galaxy and applying it to SMG2. More of the same isn’t a bad thing especially when its a nintendo title and they are even giving you Yoshi in this one! I personally haven’t played a Mario game since 64 but I know people love these games and this is probably going to be one of the top 5 games across all platforms this year. Check out the new screens below!

WiiWare Makes A Lot of Money

WiiWare to myself turned into this weekly game I play where I check the press release and hope to see the most obscure game name I’ve ever heard; most of the time they are laughable but there are a couple hidden gems. Nintendo is getting the last laugh though where in 2009, WiiWare grew over 30% almost hitting $60 million. Forecasting and Analyzing Digital Entertainment (FADE) released its annual report detailing that combined WiiWare and Virtual Console made over $125 million but separately, WiiWare barely nudged out Virtual Console by beating it by only $7 million (VC was $59 million and WiiWare topped out at $66.)

Shigeru Miyamoto to Be Inducted Into the BAFTA Fellowship

Often considered “the father of modern video games” Shigeru Miyamoto is one of the most influential people in the world of gaming with his largely successful games including the Mario, Zelda, and Donkey Kong series. Through his accomplishments, this year’s GAME British Academy Video Games Awards is inducting Miyamoto into this BAFTA on March 19 of this year at the London Hilton on Park Lane. You will be able to watch this which will be streamed live at www.bafta.org. I hope he comes out with that famous shield and sword he used promoting the latest Zelda game.

Exclusives Lineup for 2010

Whether you love ‘em or hate ‘em, you have to admit that exclusive titles are big news in the gaming world. Fanboys use them as ammunition, newcomers use them to decide which console they want, and the rest of us look to them with high expectations: if the game is being tailored for one specific system, it should be amazing on that system, right? Whatever the reason, we all want to know about exclusives, so I’ve got the 2010 line-up for you to compare.
